The Obervermunt plant II is a high pressure pumped-storage hydro-power plant under construction by Vorarlberger Illwerke on Lake Vermunt in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Saarschmiede supplied 4 forged and pre-machined shaft ends with a diameter of 3 m each and a weight of around 39 t. We are pleased to inform you that a report about the complete 4th construction year of the Obervermunt plant, which shows various intermediate stages of the construction as well as the manufacture of the components delivered by Saarschmiede for the power plant, is available in our media center.

The planned staff reductions could be implemented in a socially responsible manner, taking into account the social concerns of the employees. Völklingen, 4 December 2017 – The management and employee representatives of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede (Saarschmiede) have concluded a works agreement/social plan for workforce adjustment as of 1 January 2018. The agreement has been made against the background of a decision taken in autumn to restructure the production capacity and facilities due to a lack of capacity utilisation and, in connection with this, to reduce the workforce of 850 employees by approximately half.

Currently, the "Non-Destructive Testing" (NDT) section of Saarschmiede under the project responsibility of Dr. Alexander Zimmer is supporting our customer Siemens in the SAFT development project. The abbreviation SAFT stands for "Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique". This is a method for improving the meaningfulness of results of automated, industrial ultrasonic testing. The aim of the development is the ability of testing with higher detection sensitivity even larger parts in the turbine area of combustion engines, which are subject to high loads, in order to guarantee safe operation of the machines.

With regard to our news entry from March 8, 2016, we are pleased to inform you that as of today “The transparent shaft –materials testing with ultrasonic computed tomography”, the new film about the SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) joint research project with Siemens, is available in our media center. For the most part the film was shot in Saarschmiede’s production halls. It will offer you deeper insights into the new measurement, which will improve the process of ultrasonic testing for forgings significantly.

In keeping with the motto “Setting the course for tomorrow” future trends and prospects were in the focus during the STAHL 2015 Annual Meeting on November 12th, 2015: Industry 4.0, steels for the energy revolution, energy efficiency, or the topic “Future requirements from environmental, climate and resource policy”, for which Anke Rehlinger, Saarland’s minister for economic affairs, labor, energy and transport was among the speakers. One of the most popular talks, “On the path to Steel 4.0” was presented by Dr. Karlheinz Blessing, chairman of Dillinger Hütte and Saarstahl. His conclusion (although some things are still at the very beginning and at the same time not all is new): “On the basis of its complex production processes, its long value-added chain and the highly competitive situation the steel industry is qualified for the subject Industry 4.0 in a special way. Here, the potential is enormous.
