Successful first delivery from new warehouse in China

We are proud to report that at May 22nd 2019 the 1st tool steel block from our new warehouse in Dongguan (China) was delivered to a long-term customer. On an area of 1,000 qm we have created an opportunity with the warehouse to further shorten our delivery times for the Chinese market.

Völklingen, 12 December 2018 - Dirk Böttcher and Joerg Disteldorf will join the Management Board of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede effective 1 January 2019.

4 shaft ends successfully delivered by Saarschmiede

The Obervermunt plant II is a high pressure pumped-storage hydro-power plant under construction by Vorarlberger Illwerke on Lake Vermunt in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Saarschmiede supplied 4 forged and pre-machined shaft ends with a diameter of 3 m each and a weight of around 39 t. We are pleased to inform you that a report about the complete 4th construction year of the Obervermunt plant, which shows various intermediate stages of the construction as well as the manufacture of the components delivered by Saarschmiede for the power plant, is available in our media center.

Successful new beginning: Saarschmiede looks to the future

The restructuring of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede was successfully completed by January 1, 2018. The planned staff reductions could be implemented in a socially responsible manner, taking into account the social concerns of the employees. The company is now able to take off with a smaller and highly motivated team and is striving for a high capacity utilization of the plants.

Social plan negotiations at Saarschmiede: Socially responsible workforce adjustment – A large proportion of employees will remain within the Saarstahl group

Völklingen, 4 December 2017 – The management and employee representatives of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede (Saarschmiede) have concluded a works agreement/social plan for workforce adjustment as of 1 January 2018. The agreement has been made against the background of a decision taken in autumn to restructure the production capacity and facilities due to a lack of capacity utilisation and, in connection with this, to reduce the workforce of 850 employees by approximately half.

Following the success of the DMC 2016, Saarschmiede was once again exhibiting at the trade fair in Shanghai from June 13 to 16.

Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede to be restructured

Völklingen, 5th September 2017 – The Supervisory Board of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede agreed in its meeting today to accept the restructuring concept presented by the Management Board. Now the Supervisory Board of Saarstahl AG has to agree to the planned restructuring of the company in its meeting on 7th September 2017.

New software for ultrasonic testing – first successful industrial application

Currently, the "Non-Destructive Testing" (NDT) section of Saarschmiede under the project responsibility of Dr. Alexander Zimmer is supporting our customer Siemens in the SAFT development project. The abbreviation SAFT stands for "Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique". This is a method for improving the meaningfulness of results of automated, industrial ultrasonic testing. The aim of the development is the ability of testing with higher detection sensitivity even larger parts in the turbine area of combustion engines, which are subject to high loads, in order to guarantee safe operation of the machines.

Completion of the third Fusion for Energy contract

Saarschmiede has completed the third consecutively won contract for the production of EUROFER97 for Fusion for Energy (F4E). Fusion for Energy is the name of the joint project of the European Union which provides the European contribution to the project for the development and installment of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor).

Hydraulic press will be largest privately invested forging press in the world

Saarschmiede supplied SMS group GmbH – one of the global leaders in the area of metallurgy and rolling mill technology – with forging pieces for a giant press construction project. Around 65 forged pieces were delivered, among them press cylinders, tension anchorage, column nuts and pressure plates.

Saarschmiede wins a major contract for what is to be the largest coal-fired power plant in India

As the world's third largest emitter of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, India is currently trying to implement measures for the modernization of industrial production and, at the same time, the supply of electricity to the entire population, yet without dramatically increasing carbon dioxide emissions in the course of this. In order to meet the growing demand for electricity alone, the country will have to newly install about 15 GW annually – and this over the period of the next 30 years.

Saarschmiede to supply forgings to what is to be the largest solar power plant in the world

On the occasion of the UN COP22 Climate Change Conference from November 7 to 18 in Marrakech, Morocco, the host country’s plans for an expansion of its renewable energies, over and above its other climate objectives, were impressive: By the year 2030, a 52 % share of renewables is planned.

Organizational changes at Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede

In the future, Saarschmiede will be headed by Mr Martin Baues (spokesman) and Mr Peter Schweda, who will continue in these positions in addition to their activities as members of the board of directors of Saarstahl AG. Mr Önen Togar and Dr. Dieter Bokelmann left the company on 30 Sept. 2016.

Trade Fair Appearance at Die & Mould China (DMC)

Following the participation in SIMM in Shenzhen, Southern China, in March of this year, DMC was the first event in Eastern China (Shanghai) to promote Saarschmiede tool steel.

„The Transparent Shaft“

With regard to our news entry from March 8, 2016, we are pleased to inform you that as of today “The transparent shaft –materials testing with ultrasonic computed tomography”, the new film about the SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) joint research project with Siemens, is available in our media center. For the most part the film was shot in Saarschmiede’s production halls. It will offer you deeper insights into the new measurement, which will improve the process of ultrasonic testing for forgings significantly.

SIMM 2016

In the course of the 17th Shenzhen International Machinery Manufacturing Industry Exhibition (SIMM), which took place in Shenzhen (PRC) from March 29 until April 1, Saarschmiede initiated further measures to promote its tool steel business in China. SIMM is the largest and most influential machinery exhibition in southern China.

Martin Baues becomes Spokesman for the Management Board of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede

Völklingen, 31 March 2016 - With effect as of 1 April 2016, the Supervisory Board of Saarschmiede GmbH Freiformschmiede has appointed Martin Baues (56) as a member of and Spokesman for the Management Board for a period of 5 years.

Saarschmiede supplies rotor shaft for world’s largest hydropower generator

In the course of the general overhaul and the retrofitting of Langenprozelten Pumped Storage Station in Gemünden, Germany, Donau-Wasserkraft AG has its two generators replaced by Andritz Hydro. For this purpose, Saarschmiede supplied two huge rotor shafts.

Research project with SIEMENS yields significant results

Within the scope of a joint research project, SIEMENS and Saarschmiede have adapted a new method called SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) for industrial applications. It will revolutionize the measurement process of ultrasonic testing for forgings. The developers take advantage of a principle that originally comes from radar technology and has already been used successfully to examine other workpieces: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).

Saarschmiede supplies forgings for the energy of the future

Saarschmiede is supplying Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European Union’s organization managing the European contribution to ITER – the biggest international scientific collaboration testing the viability of fusion power as a future energy source.

Blessing: Steel industry predestined for Industry 4.0

In keeping with the motto “Setting the course for tomorrow” future trends and prospects were in the focus during the STAHL 2015 Annual Meeting on November 12th, 2015: Industry 4.0, steels for the energy revolution, energy efficiency, or the topic “Future requirements from environmental, climate and resource policy”, for which Anke Rehlinger, Saarland’s minister for economic affairs, labor, energy and transport was among the speakers. One of the most popular talks, “On the path to Steel 4.0” was presented by Dr. Karlheinz Blessing, chairman of Dillinger Hütte and Saarstahl. His conclusion (although some things are still at the very beginning and at the same time not all is new): “On the basis of its complex production processes, its long value-added chain and the highly competitive situation the steel industry is qualified for the subject Industry 4.0 in a special way. Here, the potential is enormous.
